Significant Dates in Rockingham's
History
1779 - Richmond County is
formed from Anson County.
July 16, 1788 - The first map of
the Town of Rockingham is
recorded.
Jan 5, 1792 - General Henry
William Harrington is appointed
one of nine commissioners to
select a site for the Seat of State
Government. In March 1792 the
site, now the City of Raleigh,
was selected.
1803 - Toddy Robinson builds a
dam across Hitchcock Creek at
about where, in 1984, Steele
Street crosses.
June 1827 - Because of a local
smallpox epidemic, guards are
placed at all entrances to
Rockingham to prevent anyone
entering and running the risk of
spreading the disease into the
town.
1832 - President Andrew
Jackson, running for a second
term, makes a speech under a
large oak which stood in the
southwest corner of the public
square. Afterwards, the tree was
known as "the Jackson Tree."
April 1, 1861 - The first train
reaches Rockingham. It was a
Wilmington, Charlotte &
Rutherford Railroad train.
March 7-11, 1865 -
Rockingham  is under
occupation by Union Forces.
1874 - Robert L Steele builds a
rock dam at about the same site
where, in  1803, Toddy
Robinson had built a dam across
Hitchcock Creek; this being near
the site where, in 1984, Steele
Street crosses Hitchcock Creek.
1875 - The Jackson Tree is
blown down during a violent
windstorm.
1880 - Rockingham installs its
first street lighting - kerosene
lanterns. There were only
twelve of them, and they sat on
poles eight to ten feet high.
Feb 9, 1884 - A "terrific
cyclone" swept through the area
and killed approximately
forty-five people.
July 19, 1888 - Rockingham's
"Great Fire" destroys fifteen
businesses, two hotels, and the
courthouse.
1891 - The Bank of Pee Dee is
founded.
