| Woods 5 & 10 Cent Stores - Do You Remember? written by Sara McDougald Poston |
| Do you remember the Wood's chain of stores? The Warehouse still stands on #1 South. This chain of stores originated in Rockingham and at one time they had 37 stores in North and South Carolina. Wood's employed a lot of people both at the Warehouse, which was also the buying offices, and the stores throughout both states. They had a store at Tri City Shopping Center (where Dollar General now is) and one at Westside Shopping Center (where the Health Department) now stands. The building which houses The Cake Shoppe (was the first store) had a snack bar and sold full plate lunches and the Old Thrift Center (old Rose's building downtown) was a store that belonged to Wood's also. Salesmen from New York and Illinois and other states would come to Rockingham to sell their goods to the Wood's chain. David Wood and Tom Wood both still live in Rockingham. I worked at the buying office and warehouse and was secretary to Marcus Wood. My brother, now deceased, Zeb McDougald managed several of the Wood's stores and later was a buyer for the chain. My mother, the late Annie McDougald, joined the work force when she was 59 and made floral arrangements and Easter baskets at the store uptown. She worked for Wood's until she was 72 years of age. There are still people around in Rockingham that worked for the Wood's 5 & 10 Stores. Submitted by Sara McDougald Poston Rockingham High School Class of 1959 |
