Remember These
People?
Listed below are people I came in contact with while
growing up but are not in any  particular
order....see if you recognize any of them and please
excuse if some of the names are not spelled
correctly
.
George Moody
A man that loved playing checkers, chewing tobacco and dipping snuff. He
was my Grandmother Heavner's brother.
Mr Poston
He was the trashman for Five Points and beyond but the trash dump was
located in his yard. I remember some of his children, Eugene and Margie.
My mother was always trying to help Margie, most of the time by getting
her to come to church. Regrettably, me and some of the guys used to pick
on Eugene.
Grady Smith
He also loved chewing tobacco, and made it look so good, just like eating
candy. He ran the Smiths Grocery Store up from my house. I remember
most of his children - Pally, Delores(Bubba), Daphne, and the oldest( I
can't remember her name).
Mr and Mrs Brigman
They lived next to us (at the time). They had 4 children, Jimmy, Walter,
Helen, and Glenne. I remember Walter was a carpenter, like his father.
Seems they always had a garden with plenty of vegetables.
Mr and Mrs Damon Jenkins
Great neighbors up the street from me. Their daughter, Jenny Sue, was
my childhood sweetheart. Her brothers, Woody and Jerry, were part of
the friends in the neighborhood.
The Morses
They lived across the street from the Keys. Eddie and Minnie Ellen were
their children (I believe this is right).
The Comers
Mrs Comer and her children, Marcus, Murphy and Anne lived next door to
us and were best friends in the neighborhood. Dudley Comer was their dad
and Rockingham City Commissioner 1949-1951 but passed away when I was
about 6 years old. He used to work with my wife's father John Watson at
Ford Motor downtown.
Mr and Mrs Hutchinson
Friends that lived below the Comers. They used to raise chickens and
would give us eggs all the time.
John McCuiston
He gave me my first regular job. Rockingham Roofing was the company but
I didn't last long. Needless to say, it was a very hot job. But the reason I
didn't last is that going to one of the jobs, I was setting on back of the
truck balancing on a can of tar. As we were going up Hwy 74 (right about
where the old Great Falls Mill is now), I lost my balance and fell onto the
highway. I remember I was so worried about someone running over me, I
hurried out of the road.  My shoes were knocked off and I was pretty
bloody. But I came out of it with just a few stiches. John was also one of
the first people in
Rockingham to have an in-ground pool. I believe his sons Joe and Dave have
the business now under the name of McCuiston Roofing Co. He also had two
daughters, Linda and (I can't remember the other one).
John Heavner
My late uncle and owner/operator of Five Points Barber Shop. When we
were kids, he would always come to our house and give all four boys
haircuts on the back porch. He also was a great help and great brother to
my mother.
Frank Heavner
Late uncle that lived beside Smiths store. His wife Ruby, is now in a
resthome in Carthage. Frank used to work at SAL RR in the diesel shops (I
believe or the wheel shop). Children are Brenda, Rachel, Frankie, Judy and
Jeffrey.
Frank Pate
I worked for Frank when I first got married and made about $45 a week
at his Esso Service Station in Five Points. Before Frank had it, I believe
Robert Nichols, father of fellow classmate Mary Ann Nichols, owned it.
Alvin Blackmom
He had a fast '58 White Chevy that was called The White Elephant. That
was a good looking car and Alvin was well known during the '60's. He took
me and some of the other guys riding one night across the river bridge and
really put it in the wind, about 125 mph.
Dean Ivey
Another car enthusiast of our time. He had a '65 White Chevy, beautiful
car. Hardly ever did you see that car dirty. He kept it spotless.
Coach Bill Eutsler
Probably the most winning football coach in Rham High history. I remember
one time me and Wesley Webb were caught throwing erasers in school and
were suspended from school. Before school was out that same day, we
went to Coach and he talked to Principal Mulkey and got the suspension
lifted. I read recently in the RocketPad61 that he just celebrated his
83rd birthday. Happy Birthday Coach.
Coach Roy Boyles
He was the track coach at Rham High. Also, he would drive the bus during
our summer break that would take us all to DeWitts packhouse in Ellerbe
to work peaches.
Tim Watts
Tim was another car lover. If memory serves me correctly,  he loved and
drove T-birds.
Jim Bailey
My late uncle that ran a dry cleaners and earlier, a window and awning
company on Airport Rd. I remember when I was young, he gave me a job
for a while helping put together storm windows. I also helped him put
siding on the Sunset Motel at Five Points.
Homer Benoist
He ran Five Points Grocery for years. When I was a kid, he would deliver
groceries to our house. All mom had to do was call in the list.  I remember
he used to have a Santa sitting in a fishing boat at Christmas each year in
his pond in front of his house.
The Pankeys
They lived across the street from us. Mary Sue and Sandra were their
daughters and I believe they had a son also.
The Keys
Mike and his parents lived up the street from me above where the Bevely
Hills Church is located now. I remember his house had cedar trees all
around it.
Jesse Sheppard
Jesse Sheppard was a member of the old Pee Dee Pentecostal Holiness
Church I attended. He played the guitar and sang. We used to visit with
him in Roberdell and were friends with his children, Nelson, Johnny, Tonda,
and Reba. I believe he is about 85 now but still looks like he did years ago.
I ran into him a year or so ago in Palmer Henderson while visiting Marie
Avant and he told me he belived the reason the good Lord had kept him in
such good health was because he needed to take care of his daughter,
Reba.
Sam Coble
Another member of the above church. Sam loved hunting and Dad, he and
my brothers would often go. As much as an outdoorsman that he was, Sam
had all daughters. I also remember Sam was involved in the Boys Club at
the church.
Rev Baxley
He was one of the many preachers at our old church. I remember he would
preach some hell and firestone sermons and really get your attention. His
daughter Cheryl and son Robert were childhood friends. In fact, when my
wife and I got married, we lived with Robert and his wife, Sue, for a few
weeks.
Charles & Robert Seago
Charles Seago was the owner of Seagos Restaurant in Five Points. His
brother, Robert, helped him manage it. I was a curb hop at this restaurant
and waited on many customers. Robert Seago was a chain smoker. I
remember inside the restaurant, he would have a cigarette lit in every
ashtray on the counter.

Bruce Traylor
The Traylors lived below us in a yellow house. We used to play ball in their
front yard. They had a daughter named Carol and she was my brother
Randys girlfriend. I believe Bruce was a carpenter.

chugging along, another page
