| John Phillips Little (1827-1905) belonged to a prominent northern Richmond County family founded by his father, Thomas Little (1781-1855). The elder Little immigrated to North Carolina from England in 1806 and acquired a knowledge of cotton cultivation as overseer on one of Henry W. Harrington Sr.'s Anson County plantations. Subsequently he rose to become one of the region's wealthiest cotton planters.
