Rockingham Remembered
Richmond County's Architectural History
Covington-Nichols House
Wall Ferry Road, Rockingham vicinity
1826
The architectural highlight of this two-story frame house is its spectacular
west gable-end chimney, which features double paved shoulders, a detached
stack, and three large nested diamond figures, outlined with dark glazed
header bricks, that rise tip to tip up the face of the chimney. The chimney
base is parged and scored to imitate ashlar masonry. The base of the
chimney on the east gable end has a similar treatment, although the chimney
above has been parged, hiding any decorative brickwork that may exist. An
1826 date is said to appear on the east chimney. To read more about this
