| History on Hitchcock's Creek in Rockingham |
| From: David Hitchcock Date: 06/17/05 20:52:16 To: joel@rockinghamremembered.com Subject: Hitchcock's Creek Joel, I ran across your Rockingham site looking for information on Hitchcock's Creek and thought I would send the following. This information on Hitchcock's Creek is from a book entitled "The Hitchcock, Hedgecock, and Hedgcock Family in Maryland and North Carolina and Their Decendents" by Robert E. Hedgecock from McDowell Publications, October 2000, 2nd Edition. The author says the information cannot be sent on the Internet without his permission, so I'm paraphrasing what it says: Hitchcock's Creek got its name from John Hitchcock who owned 300 acres in this location close to Rockingham. He acquired the land in May 1741 in what was then Bladen County, NC. John Hitchcock was brother of William Hitchcock, my great-great-great-great-great grandfather (if I got them all in). They moved to North Caroling from Maryland. John apparently was a rebellious character who liked to "live in the wild" and didn't like to stay in one place. He apparently hid Revolutionary soldiers from the Tories and provided supplies as well. He owned quite a bit of land and was reported to run into South Carolina as well. Of the direct descendent family members I've read about, he is the most intriguing and exciting. The family later moved to Georgia and then Texas where my father was born. Best wishes and hope this proves interesting. David Hitchcock, AICP, MRCP Environment Group HARC 4800 Research Forest Dr. The Woodlands, TX 77381 |
