Grandpa & Grandma
Heavner - I Remember
The Days
Rockingham Remembered
Joel's Memories
I  am sure everyone has memories of visiting their
grandparents when they were young. This is a
recollection of my memories of Grandma (Corena
Moody)  and Grandpa (Lewis Frank) Heavner when
we used to visit their home.

When I was a young kid, Grandpa and Grandma
Heavner lived off of old Ellerbe Rd. Some of you
probably remember Waters Cafe that used to set
between Old Ellerbe Rd and Northam Cemetery Rd.
They lived down Old Ellerbe Rd right before you get to
the new highway now. I remember you would travel
down an old dirt road and their house was on the left.

It was a neat old house. I remember it had plenty of
trees in the yard, shrubs, and a swing. The thing I
remember the most was that they had a detached
garage. It was always fun to play around that garage -
but you had to look out for the wasp nests that were
always there. My brothers and I and uncle Jimmy
Heavner were always playing there. Jimmy was the
youngest of the Heavner clan and still lived there with
grandpa and grandma. He was just like a cousin to us.
We would climb all over that old garage - and when
grandpa parked his old car, I believe it was an old
Mercury, there, we would use it as a ladder to help
boost us up into the rafters. That old car was a straight
drive and we would get inside and shift the gears
continously - it's a wonder we didn't ever get that car
rolling and hurt someone.

One time when I was eating a banana, I threw the
banana peel behind some schrubs at the old house.
My grandpa and uncle John Heavner were sitting in
the swing in the yard. I didn't realize that grandpa had
seen me throw that banana peel in the bushes - but he
did! He came out of that swing like a bolt of lightning!
Needless to say, that banana peel didn't stay behind
the scrubs very long.

If you ever watch
Everybody Loves Raymond, Frank
and Marie Barone are the spitting image of my
grandpa and grandma. Grandpa Heavner looked just
like Frank Barone. Every time I watch that show, they
remind me of my grandparents. There are of course
differences. Frank loves to eat and grandpa loved to
smoke Camels and/or Lucky Strikes. Marie is a true
gossiper and buttinksie. Grandma loved to speak her
mine and loved dipping that snuff. She would
embarrass you around your friends every time. But I
still loved them and miss them to this day.

When they finally moved out of that house on old
Ellerbe Rd and moved across the street from my mom
and dad's house, I couldn't beleive it. For some reason
I just didn't think they could afford the house they
moved in. But they did and it worked out pretty good
for my mom. There again, it reminds me of the
Barones on TV. In-laws living right across from you.
But I am sure it made my mom happy, having her
parents within walking distance.

These were truly the good 'ole days and are etched in
my memory forever.
