1972 - The Great Falls Mill Fire
|
Plans for a million-dollar textile museum to be located in Rockingham
went up in flames Sunday, October 8, 1972, when the old Great Falls
Mill building was destroyed by fire.
The Great Falls Mill building was built in 1869 and was thought to
have been the seventh textile mill built in the state. The mill was closed
in the 1930's by the depression but was used to store cotton until just a
few years before the fire destroyed it.
The photos below capture the fire and the dreams that went up in
smoke.
