1968 - Highway 220
Rockingham Remembered
Ye Olde Scrapbook
In the photo at the top is the late E. Bert McLaurin standing
next to Highway 220 while the road was being "four-laned" in
1968. The photographer was looking north. The Pee Dee
Methodist Church is at the left, and the Pee Dee Baptist
Church is in the right background.
(To the left of the
Methodist church, up the hill, is the route we used to take
when we walked home from school - which conveniently went
past Johns Pool Hall.)
The bottom photo shows a 1973 photo
of the new Pee Dee Baptist Church, rebuilt on a higher
elevation because of the widening of the highway.
(To the
right and up on the hill in this photo is the location of the old
Pee Dee Pentecostal Holiness Church I went to when I was a
kid. It has changed names now and my mother still goes
there.)
