| 1895 - Beth Carr Institute |
| The "Beth Carr Institute," as it was usually written, was used as a schoolhouse from 1882 until 1887. By the time this photo, made about 1895, was taken, the building was a residence. Later, the Rockingham Railroad freight station was on the site, at the corner of Lee and Greene Streets. Miss Lucy Phillips (later Mrs. Lucy Phillips Russell), who came to Rockingham to teach at the school, often pointed out that the true name of the school was the "Beth-Car Institute," the Hebrew word meaning, literally, "house of children." Miss Phillips and Iva McCall were the first teachers at the school. Later teachers included Dr. William Carroll and a Miss Whitney. |
