| 1880 Saloon in Rockingham |
| Joe M. McLaurin, who has collected well over 10,000 old Richmond County photographs for his "Richmond County Historical Collection," says the photograph above may be the oldest local photo he has yet seen.(In 1984). It depicts a saloon somewhere in the vicinity of Rockingham. The print in McLaurin's collection, from which this is copied, was itself copied from an old tintype - which explains why the word "Saloon" is printed in reverse or mirror image, on the front of the building. McLaurin estimates that the tintype was made about 1880. |
