Below are photos furnished by Herman Searcy of the Old
Rockingham Dirt Track and some of the drivers and their cars
during the 1950s. (
Thanks to Herman for providing all these photos - I
remember most of these names and faces as I remember the old Rockingham
race track - I don't believe I ever paid to watch the races, since I was so young
at the time - but I do remember sneaking in and watching. "Winding" Wayne
Andrews was one of my favorites, as he drove Chevys...jb)

Start-Finish Line: (92) Jack Smith, (9) Bobby Webb, (4) John
Sears, (34) J.D. McDuffy, (12) Flukie Hawkins.
I think the 99 car shown in infield was Clyde Norton, Hamlet.
The V-8 cars on track now and 6 cylinder cars in the infield
waiting to race.

Bill Bostick, who operated a Pure Oil station on US Hwy 1
North, at the time of this photo, located next to Eastside
Cemetery.  He later operated the Holiday Shell Station next to
Holiday Restaurant and last was operator of Phillips 66 Station
at Five Points.  A great driver and good friend of mine. Sponsor
of this car was "Bookie" Long who owned Long's Body Shop on
East Washington Street, another one of my best friends.

I think I have Light's last name right. Talked with Joe Green
about him as Joe is really up on all the old drivers and he told
me Light Issom was from Siler City and a good driver. I never
met him personally that I remember.

Walson Gardner, a local driver from Rockingham and
operated Walts Pure Oil Station and raced.  He is father of
"Bugs" Gardner who is also a local racer and operated the
Pure Oil Station on Broad Avenue across the street from
Subway in Rockingham presently.

"Winding" Wayne Andrews. A really good racer. He was
either from Sanford, NC or Asheboro. Not sure which town.  A
good nickname for a racer though.

John Robert Stogner, a really colorful individual if there ever
was one. I knew him quite well and considered him a really
good friend. He worked for Russell Bennet Chev. for many
years and ran the used car section mostly. He passed away
recently and was still doing his thing until the last. A great guy
and I miss him.

One of my old time favorite buddies, Buck Covington.Owned
and operated Covington's Body Shop, Highland Pines until
retirement and his son Gene took over business.  Buck is still
going strong and now rides his motorcycle most of the time.
Probably be most noted with the younger set now for being
Bucky Covington's grandfather.
