Subject: Hitchcock Creek
David’s email on the creek jogged the old brain and brought back
several good times. In my day, Hitchcock Creek was commonly referred
to as “Sh**t Creek since a lot of sewage was dumped straight into
the creek. The knowledge of that did not deter some of us though and
we journeyed to the end of High Street and swam in it more than once.
We also camped and fished along the banks up the creek towards
Ledbetter and in the Pee Dee area and it was not bad in those areas. I
remember walking back up High Street from the creek ( my Grandmother
and Aunt lived on the street) and my Uncle upon seeing my wet hair
asked what the toilet paper was doing in my hair. I guess it is a wonder
that any of us survived. As I remember the swimming group was Bill
Saunders, Herb Smith, Joe Maske, Mike Covington, and myself. I’m
older but not sure that I’m much wiser. In any case I still could not
have asked for a better place to grow up or better people to be around.
