I'm not sure how old I was, maybe seven or eight, but I was entered in the Arthur Smith Talent Contest that was held at the L J Bell Auditorium. As I little kid I could sing OK and wasn't too bashful in front of family or friends but I had never been in anything like that with an auditorium full of folks! Needless to say I was scared to death! I sang "How Much is That Doggie in the Window"! Bennett Tarleton's Mother was supposed to play the piano but she was ill I think and I had to stand up there all alone and sing. Bottom line is that there were some really talented folks there and I won the audience approval first place prize which was ten dollars. Lot of money for me at that point in my life. I'm happy to say that was also my last solo performance, within a few years my voice changed and I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. Must have been my "fifteen minutes of fame"! Mike |
