I believe your grandfather indeed was a machinist, as was my dad. His specialty was operating the big lathes. I think they actually made precision replacement parts for all kinds of heavy equipment. The Roadway Shops, as you probably know, were older and at a different location from the diesel shops. The Roadway shops were out Boyds Lake Road about half way between the old roundhouse site and the lake. You turned left up one of the side streets and the shops were two blocks up. They're all gone now, except for the old concrete floor with a RR track running down the middle. If we're ever there at the same time, I can show you almost exactly where the lalthes sat that your grandfather operated. I did not know your Uncle Frank. |
