Joel, I looked at your Rockingham Remembered site for the first
time tonight, and having discovered the link on the new Richmond
County Journal web site. I enjoyed checking parts of it out. Will look
in more detail later as it's now pushing one AM.
I knew your uncle John Heavner and your grandfather.Your
grandfather worked with my dad at the SAL Roadway shops in
Hamlet. I used to go over there sometime when I was a kid, and I
specifically remember that your grandfather operated one of those
huge metal cutting lathes. There were several of them in the
shop, and my recollection is that they were at least 15 feet long,
maybe more like 20. My dad was born in 1901 and died in 1959.
