Joel... wuz brows'n ROCKINGHAM REMEMBERED and saw the
commentary on the 1940's photo of the old U.S.O. Club.  It was indeed
the former library. At one point, just the small wing to the left side of
the building was the library. In the mid and late 1950's the main part
of the building was used on Saturday nights as the TEEN-AGE CLUB.
The Dance Floor was upstairs, and there was refreshments down stairs.
There was more than square dancing. That was the place to go to show
your SHAG technique. As I remember, David Hall and Linda Kay Morse
were the king & queen of the SHAG. Here's a snapshot of a 50's
Saturday night inside the building:
(Nov 18, 2009 - Joel,

As always, I love strolling down memory lane on 'Rockingham
Remembered'. As I was browsing, I came across the picture taken in
the old Richmond County Library building picturing teenagers in the '50's
attending a Saturday night dance at the old 'Teen-Age Club'. I
remember this well as I used to get to tag along with my mother (Theo
Smith) and her best buddy Mary Louise Ellwanger (George, Bobby, &
Mary Lou's mother) as they were frequent chaperones. I thought it
really ironic as the only people I could recognize were the same ones
that Harry recognized, (left to right) HELEN STURKIE, CAROL
BALLARD, and HORACE STEADMAN (kneeling). I have just today
discovered some of the others. I am still in contact with Helen Sturkie
Grose, and when I made her aware of the picture she emailed me and
identified the following:  (The cute little 'Bobbie Soxers' left to right
are in fact) HELEN STURKIE, CAROL BALLARD, JUDY THROWER, and
ANNE TERRY (does everyone remember that Anne's mother taught
kindergarten in the basement of her home on Ann Street), and HORACE
STEADMAN is kneeling.  Thanks to Helen, this leaves only the four in
the middle unidentified. There are some really good memories in this old
building!

GO ROCKETS!

Notice the "bobbie sox" and the "V" neck sweaters. Hard to recognize
anyone in such a snapshot, but I believe the girl on the far left is
HELEN STURKIE, and that is CAROL BALLARD standing next to her.
HORACE STEADMAN appears to be the fella squatting on the far right.
All of the RHS class of '56.

Have a great NEW YEAR!!
